Toy Story 5 Trailer Sets The Beloved Duo Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
The preview shows Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Last Installment
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the key figure among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
