"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. A host of famous supporters have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their music videos often depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to start a band."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
