The star has donated the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound award winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on 16 October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 local spots across the UK.

The donation supported locations that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties arising from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in improving facilities and gear that helped artists and fans.

"The concept that money from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his award prize money to good deeds.

Back when the band earned the award in 1996 for their album Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the group would contribute their cash to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her award between a few good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they needed better apparatus," she shared with a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that supported their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients the group gave their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued two grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in that area and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
