Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
