RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
